Newly Sentient Being arrives on October 2 as a document of an ending—not the end of Swans.
Swans’ next release is a farewell with a qualification. Due on October 2, 2026, Newly Sentient Being documents the Berlin concert that closed the group’s “Big Sound” era. Michael Gira is not announcing the end of Swans: in the statement accompanying the release, he describes a next phase with a smaller, more intimate musical palette.
According to Young God Records’ release page, the performance was recorded on November 28, 2025. The programme runs for approximately two and a half hours and includes material the label says has not been recorded elsewhere. A concert DVD accompanies the physical release, with the video directed by Marco Porsia and Peter Harton. This is an audio-and-film document of a specific configuration reaching its endpoint, rather than a retrospective assembled from across the band’s history.
The Mute CD-and-DVD listing confirms five pieces: “The End of Forgetting,” “The Merge,” “Paradise Is Mine,” “Newly Sentient Being” and “The End of Regretting.” It also confirms the October 2 release date. Those titles occupy a double CD; the generous running time is not the result of an unusually long tracklist.
Gira’s accompanying statement dates the beginning of this phase to his decision to reconvene Swans in 2010. He credits Norman Westberg, Dana Schechter, Phil Puleo, Larry Mullins, Kristof Hahn and Christopher Pravdica alongside himself for the final tour. His account stresses both the intensity the ensemble sought and the physical and psychological effort involved in reaching it. That distinction matters: the proposed change is presented as a decision about what the music can demand of its makers, not simply a change of personnel.
There is a practical wrinkle for buyers. Young God currently warns that production delays will push its boxsets and gatefold vinyl orders to mid-October, while CD orders are scheduled to ship for the October 2 release. The album date and the arrival of every physical edition should not be treated as interchangeable.
For now, Newly Sentient Being gives that transition a defined object: one concert, five extended pieces and a film, issued after the ensemble has stopped. What comes next remains Gira’s stated intention, not yet a sound this release briefing can describe.
